College Golf’s Most Outstanding Award.

From the seaside town of Liverpool to a quaint Donald Ross course in Georgia, Fred Haskins built a reputation for mentoring young golfers and as a master club-maker. Haskins was head professional at the Country Club of Columbus for 34 years starting in 1922, recommended for the position by the legendary Bobby Jones. His proteges learned the game in Saturday morning classes that cost a nickel and they went on to win more than 150 collegiate and amateur tournaments.

Since its formation in 1971, the Haskins Commission has been devoted to amateur golf and the presentation of the Haskins Award. This coveted trophy honors the year’s outstanding college golfer and the memory of Fred Haskins, a club pro that spent his life nurturing and mentoring amateur golfers. The commission, based in Columbus, Ga., oversees the voting conducted among college golfers, coaches and golf media.

Ludvig Aberg - Texas Tech

2023 Haskins Award Winner

Ludvig Aberg is the first Haskins winner from Texas Tech and the first Swedish player to win. He became the first male golfer in Big 12 history to win the conference title in back-to-back seasons. He also won the Norman Regional, making him the only player in Division I golf to win both a conference and regional title in one season. Aberg claimed the Big 12 individual title at Prairie Dunes in Kansas by eight shots, shooting a tournament-record 15-under 265. He also had victories at the Valspar Collegiate and The Prestige. On the year, he had nine top-10 finishes.

The Haskins Trophy

The Haskins Award has name plaques that rival some of the most well known Majors and PGA tournaments. It started with Ben Crenshaw winning the inaugural Haskins Award in 1971 and then followed it up the next two years again. Phil Mickelson was also a three-time winner. Tiger won in 1996 right before his first PGA Tour victory. Incredibly, Jay Haas and son, Bill Haas were both winners. Faxon, Cink, Duval, Kuchar, Cantlay and Thomas are just some of the household names we’ve seen shine in their professional careers. In all, Haskins Winners have gone on to win 316 PGA Tournaments and 32 Major Championships.
