College Golf’s Most Outstanding Award.

From the seaside town of Liverpool to a quaint Donald Ross course in Georgia, Fred Haskins built a reputation for mentoring young golfers and as a master club-maker. Haskins was head professional at the Country Club of Columbus for 34 years starting in 1922, recommended for the position by the legendary Bobby Jones. His proteges learned the game in Saturday morning classes that cost a nickel and they went on to win more than 150 collegiate and amateur tournaments.

Since its formation in 1971, the Haskins Commission has been devoted to amateur golf and the presentation of the Haskins Award. This coveted trophy honors the year’s outstanding college golfer and the memory of Fred Haskins, a club pro that spent his life nurturing and mentoring amateur golfers. The commission, based in Columbus, Ga., oversees the voting conducted among college golfers, coaches and golf media.

History of the Haskins Award

“Behind Every Champion” presented by Masters Winner, Larry Mize

David Ford - North Carolina

2025 Haskins Award Winner

Ford, the No. 1 ranked collegiate player, the No. 3 ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, and No. 1 in PGA Tour U standings, received a great number of votes to win the 2025 Haskins Award, but just enough to outnumber Florida State’s Luke Clanton. This year’s vote was the closest race in the last 20 years for the Haskins Award. Ford recorded five victories with three consecutive wins finishing out the regular season, including the Valspar Intercollegiate Invitational, Augusta Haskins Award Invitational, and the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. He broke five UNC Men’s Golf records in a single season which include wins (five), stroke average (68.78), score to par (-89), average score to par per round (-2.47), and rounds in the 60s (25). Ford was also named to the 2025 Ping Men’s Golf All-East Region Team, becoming the first in Tar Heel history to make All-Region team in each of his four seasons.

The Haskins Trophy

The Haskins Award has name plaques that rival some of the most well known Majors and PGA tournaments. It started with Ben Crenshaw winning the inaugural Haskins Award in 1971 and then followed it up the next two years again. Phil Mickelson was also a three-time winner. Tiger won in 1996 right before his first PGA Tour victory. Incredibly, Jay Haas and son, Bill Haas were both winners. Faxon, Cink, Duval, Kuchar, Cantlay and Thomas are just some of the household names we’ve seen shine in their professional careers. In all, Haskins Winners have gone on to win 316 PGA Tournaments and 32 Major Championships.
